Brookhurst Care provides long-term residential care homes for young adults with a moderate or severe learning disability, in Woking, Surrey, and can support autism, downs syndrome, epilepsy and diabetes, and others with complex needs or challenging behaviour.
We support residents in pursuing activity programmes tailored specifically to their individual interests and development needs, through high one-to-one staffing ratios and friendly, well-trained staff teams.
We currently have two homes in Woking, at Combe House, which still has some vacancies and Beech Trees.

- Respect residents’ dignity, individual rights and choice
- Understand, create and maintain a healthy environment
- Support on-going educational and vocational activities

Supporting development and increased independence:
We have a strong commitment to supporting individual all-round development; helping some residents with their transition from teenager to adulthood, assisting all residents in becoming more confident and independent, whilst helping them to manage the risks facing young people growing up.
We place a strong emphasis on improving communication skills, using TEACCH for autism, makaton symbols, pictures, photographs and objects of reference.
We also help residents to develop their physical capabilities, and with their education and skills development, in terms of day-to-day life skills, including domestic skills, and vocation skills.

Involvement in the local community:
We encourage integration within the local community, for work experience, sport and social activities. Residents are encouraged to join colleges, and adult education classes relating to any topics in which they are interested.
We prefer individual programmes, selectively utilising broader community facilities where possible, to use of special day service centres, with common programmes for all.

Managing behaviour and risks – our philosophy of care:
We develop individual risk assessments for each resident, along with specific guidelines and strategies to help them manage and reduce any anxieties and challenging behaviour which they may have. These are complemented by a comprehensive set of policies and procedures, which are continuously updated, refined and improved.
The NAPPI (non abusive psychological and physical intervention) philosophy of care and techniques provide a framework for managing challenging behaviour.

Autism:
We cater, in particular, for those on the autistic spectrum. We have highly trained autism champions in each home, and all staff receive specific training in dealing with challenging behaviour associated with autism, using TEACCH communication methods. We are currently pursuing special autism accreditation.

Quality and the staff team:
We invest heavily in staff training, to develop expertise and ensure the highest possible quality of support.
We are committed to employing staff who are properly trained and motivated towards meeting the needs of the individuals within our care. We expect very high standards of conduct and integrity.
